How to Act Out Animals in Charades

Animal charades is one of the most accessible categories for all ages because every animal has at least one distinctive physical trait — a giraffe's long neck, an elephant's trunk, a penguin's waddle. The trick is to commit fully: get low for a crocodile, spread your arms wide for an eagle, hop with both feet for a frog. Half-hearted miming makes easy animals impossible to guess.

Animal Charades by Habitat

Land Animals – Acting Tips

Easy land animals: Dog (pant + tail wag), Cat (lick paw + stretch), Elephant (swing arm as trunk), Giraffe (stretch neck tall), Monkey (scratch armpits + swing). Medium: Bear (lumber + swipe paws), Snake (slither along ground), Kangaroo (hop with arms tucked). Hard: Armadillo (curl into ball), Platypus (bill gesture + paddle + lay egg), Meerkat (stand upright + alert gaze). Land animals generally give you the most physical space to work with, making them ideal for energetic kids and adults alike.

Marine Animals – Acting Tips

Easy marine animals: Fish (flap hands as fins + open and close mouth), Dolphin (leap + click sounds mimed), Shark (fin on top of head + circle). Medium: Octopus (wave eight arms), Crab (sideways walk with pincer hands), Jellyfish (float + trail arms below). Hard: Seahorse (upright swimming with no arms, using only a swaying motion), Anglerfish (dark + dangle light in front of face). Marine animals often require creative use of the floor — don't be afraid to lie down for a flat flounder or sea turtle. For more ideas, see our full kids charades list which includes a dedicated animals section.

Birds – Acting Tips

Easy birds: Penguin (waddle with arms out), Parrot (bob head + mime talking), Owl (wide eyes + swivel head). Medium: Eagle (spread arms + soar in wide circles), Flamingo (stand on one leg + tuck head), Toucan (mime large beak). Hard: Hummingbird (hover in one spot + mime tiny rapid wingbeats), Peacock (spread arms behind back as tail feathers).

Animal Charades by Age Group

Ages 4–7

Stick to animals children see every day or in popular cartoons. Best picks: Dog, Cat, Duck, Frog, Cow, Horse, Pig, Rabbit, Fish. Use 2-minute timers and celebrate all attempts warmly.

Ages 8–12

Kids this age enjoy exotic animals from nature documentaries: Gorilla, Cheetah, Komodo Dragon, Manta Ray, Axolotl, Narwhal. Mix in funny ones like Wombat and Capybara for laughs.

Adults

Adults enjoy oddly specific animals that require creative mime: Platypus, Pangolin, Naked Mole Rat, Blobfish, Mantis Shrimp. The harder to mime, the funnier — which is the whole point of adult animal charades.
